Historic District Signs

The Marion County Historical Society have installed six new historic district signs to designate some of the important areas of our community.   These decorative signs were entirely funded by the Historical Society.  Mrs. Ann Simmons, President of the Historical Society, with the help of City of Columbia Mayor Reed Houston, and others, determined the placement of the signs.  There are two signs designating the Broad Street district, one is accross from the Public Library at Park Avenue and the other is across from the Corner Oaks Bed and Breakfast near High School Avenue.  There is also a Keys Hill sign at the Broad Street and Sumrall Road intersection and a Church Street historic district sign near the intersection of Church Street and Sumrall Road.  The Main Street sign is near the Columbia Post Office and the North Main sign is near The Deck across from Regions Bank at the North Main intersection.

The historic district signs feature an image of the courthouse dome and were locally produced, designed by Tony Weinedel and constructed by St. James Lighting.  The light-reflective graphics for the signs were done by Nik Ingram at RD Graphics. The Historical Society hopes to get more signs like these placed in the future.  In addition to designating historic areas, hopefully these signs will help to instill a sense of pride in the community and an appreciation for our unique history.
