Geocaching Workshop
The Tourism Committee of the Marion County Development Partnership recently presented a Geocaching workshop for local residents. Geocaching is a high-tech form of treasure hunting sport that utilizes Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and coordinates that are uploaded on the internet. Ms. Lacey Bishop from the Mississippi Geocachers Association gave an excellent overview of this popular sport and took the attendees out for a hands-on experience by finding hidden geocaches that she had placed before the workshop. She also showed a variety of different geocache containers and the types of contents typically found in a geocache, such as trackable Geocoins, collectible trinkets and tiny logbooks.
Some of the participants are already active geocachers that have several hidden treasures placed around Marion County. Ms. Bishop shared many of the benefits of Geocaching including increased income to the area from tourism, the discovery of new and interesting places, healthy and family friendly entertainment, and environmental benefits from programs such as Cache In Trash Out, which is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community.
