HISTORY OF MARION COUNTY

Marion County’s long and illustrious history is an interesting tale that dates back to the days of the original Mississippi Territory. Read through this multi-part series to get a glimpse of the unique historical value of the area and its characters.

The history of Marion County is filled with rich stories of conquest and betrayal, love and war, and an abundance of hardships mixed with triumph. Marion County is named after Francis Marion, a South Carolina based guerilla leader in the Revolutionary War known as the “Swamp Fox.”
